The Filariasis Research Unit based at the Government T D Medical College, Kerala, India is designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for LF MMDP
Congratulations to the Filariasis Research Unit based at the Government T D Medical College on being awarded WHO Collaborating Centre status for lymphatic filariasis (LF) morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP).
Professor Suma Krishnasastry will lead the Centre with the assistance of a team of medics to support WHO’s training activities for national trainers, health care providers and programme managers towards improving the quality of LF MMDP services.
The Filariasis Research Unit has been undertaking research in various aspects of LF including MMDP training for the last 30 years. As a Collaborating Centre, activities will strengthen the capacity of LF endemic countries’ national programmes to expand the availability of the WHO recommended care for persons suffering with the manifestations of LF. The aim is to achieve 100% geographical coverage of the recommended package of care in WHO regional countries.
The next regional Workshop is planned for next month (July 2019) for participants from 5 SEARO and 4 EMRO countries.
Professor Krishnasastry is a member of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis Steering Group, currently as Chair of the Representative Contact Group.
